Bigger, stronger Hawks claim AFL glory
SUNDAY, 28 SEPTEMBER 2008Our protein-powered Hawks have upset hot favourites Geelong to clinch their first premiership win in 17 years, capping off an amazing season and a comeback journey that started 4 years ago.
The road to September glory began in 2004 when Hawthorn first partnered with Aussie Bodies. The team was full of youth and promise, many of the players outsized and outgunned by tougher, more senior opponents on the field.
The side finished 15th that year but the foundations for a bigger, stronger side were only just being built, with 2005 and 2006 going down as pivotal growth seasons for the club.
Under the expertise of head fitness coach Andrew Russell and team dietitian Lisa Sutherland, the Hawks incorporated protein supplements in their training and fitness regime throughout the offseason and as part of their post-match recovery midseason.
The sport of AFL takes a tremendous toll on an athlete's body, and the ability to back up quickly from one weekend to the next is critical. This is why Hawthorn incorporated Protein FX and Protein Revival immediately after a game, taking advantage of the recovery-optimising attributes of protein and carbohydrate.
Protein is additionally important in a sport where perceived strength – the ability to visibly intimidate – has become just as important as performance. For this reason, Hawks prescribed Mega Weight Gainer and Perfect Protein to those younger, leaner players needing to add bulk and size.
After finishing 5th in 2007, the Hawks crashed through to '08 finals contention a more fearsome, determined pack. Their hard-running midfield, considered a weakness only two seasons ago, physically wore down a seemingly all-conquering Geelong. The Hawks' persistence and tenacity in defence was also a major factor.
Aussie Bodies is incredibly proud of the team's achievements and join them in looking ahead to ongoing success. We believe the club is on the brink of a dynasty. A protein-powered one at that!
