Vitamin D

Produced naturally by the action of sunlight with the oily substance in the skin, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin which is best obtained by being outdoors. The darker the skin, the more sunlight required to obtain adequate amounts. (Excessive amounts lead to sunburn, which equates to overdosing on vitamin D!)

What does it do?

The main function of this vitamin is to regulate all mineral and vitamin metabolism, especially that of minerals calcium and phosphorous. It is essential for the health of the glandular and nervous systems and healthy bones and teeth. Vitamin D is also essential for the growth of children. Moreover it is required by the thyroid gland to manufacture hormones which control metabolic processes, such as digestion.

Deficiency:

Lack of vitamin D will impact all the above and increase susceptibility to colds and flu.

Sources:

Apart from sunshine, vitamin D is available through ingestion of sunflower seeds and meal, fish oils, fresh fish, alfalfa, fresh fruit and vegetables, mik, butter, celery, spinach, sprouted seeds and corn.
