Leucine
An essential amino acid identical in chemical composure to isoleucine.
It is part of the three branch-chained amino acids (BCAA) – the other two being isoleucine and valine.
Leucine assists to regulate blood sugar and energy levels. It also assists growth hormone production, wound healing, as well as growth and repair of muscle tissue. Leucine also assists preventing breakdown of muscle proteins as a result of severe stress or trauma.
Although leucine deficiency is rare, those at risk are individuals on low protein diets. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, depression and confusion.
